SSC MTS and Havaldar: Exam Pattern and Practice Questions

The Staff Selection Commission recruits Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff and Havaldars for CBIC and CBN through one examination. According to the official 2025 notice (the latest found), MTS candidates take a Computer Based Examination only, while Havaldar candidates also take a Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Standard Test. The CBE is held in two sessions on the same day: Session-I covers numerical ability and reasoning, Session-II covers general awareness and English.

What the SSC MTS exam consists of

  • Session-I, Part I – Numerical and Mathematical Ability20 questions, 60 marks. Integers, LCM and HCF, fractions, BODMAS, percentage, ratio, work and time, averages, simple interest, profit and loss, discount, area and perimeter, distance and time, lines and angles, simple graphs, squares and square roots.
  • Session-I, Part II – Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving20 questions, 60 marks. Alpha-numeric series, coding and decoding, analogy, directions, similarities and differences, jumbling, non-verbal reasoning, age calculations, calendar and clock. No negative marking in Session-I.
  • Session-II, Part I – General Awareness25 questions, 75 marks. Social studies (history, geography, art and culture, civics, economics), general science and environmental studies up to 10th standard.
  • Session-II, Part II – English Language and Comprehension25 questions, 75 marks. Vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, correct usage and questions on a simple paragraph. Session-II carries a one-mark penalty per wrong answer.
  • How the sessions are evaluatedSession-I is evaluated first; Session-II is evaluated only for candidates who qualify in Session-I. Both sessions are mandatory.
  • PET / PST (Havaldar only)Walking test – 1600 metres in 15 minutes for men, 1 km in 20 minutes for women – and minimum physical standards, conducted by CBIC/CBN.

SSC MTS tips

  • Session-I has no negative marking, so attempt every question there.
  • Session-II deducts one mark per wrong answer – skip questions you cannot narrow down.
  • You must qualify in Session-I before Session-II is even evaluated, so do not neglect maths and reasoning.
  • Havaldar candidates should practise brisk walking against the clock well before the PET.

Are these real SSC MTS exam questions?

No. The 50 practice questions are original items written by SimpleQuizMaker, not official SSC questions or past-paper items. They only practise the four parts that the official notice lists.

How many questions are in the SSC MTS computer-based exam?

The official 2025 notice describes 90 questions in two sessions: Session-I has 20 Numerical and Mathematical Ability and 20 Reasoning questions (120 marks); Session-II has 25 General Awareness and 25 English questions (150 marks). Each session lasts 45 minutes.

Is there negative marking in SSC MTS?

Only in Session-II. The notice states there is no negative marking in Session-I and a deduction of one mark for each wrong answer in Session-II.

What is the difference between MTS and Havaldar selection?

For MTS the examination is the CBE only. For Havaldar in CBIC and CBN, candidates also have to qualify in the Physical Efficiency Test (a timed walk) and the Physical Standard Test.

In which languages is the exam conducted?

The notice says the CBE is conducted in Hindi, English and 13 regional languages. The English Language and Comprehension part is, by its nature, in English.
