SSC CHSL Practice Test: Tier-I Pattern and 50 Questions

The Combined Higher Secondary (10+2) Level Examination is the Staff Selection Commission’s computer-based exam for posts such as Lower Division Clerk / Junior Secretariat Assistant and Data Entry Operator. It runs in two tiers. Tier-I is a 60-minute objective test in four equal parts; Tier-II adds longer objective sections, a qualifying Computer Knowledge Test and a qualifying skill or typing test. Use the 50 original questions below to practise the Tier-I mix.

How the CHSL exam is structured

  • Tier-I Part I: English Language (Basic Knowledge)25 questions, 50 marks, 15-minute sectional timer. The notice lists the English, Hindi and regional-language options for Parts II–IV only, not for this part.
  • Tier-I Part II: General Intelligence25 questions, 50 marks, 15-minute sectional timer.
  • Tier-I Part III: Quantitative Aptitude (Basic Arithmetic Skill)25 questions, 50 marks, 15-minute sectional timer.
  • Tier-I Part IV: General Awareness25 questions, 50 marks, 15-minute sectional timer.
  • Tier-II Session-ISection-I: Mathematical Abilities (30) and Reasoning and General Intelligence (30), 180 marks, 1 hour. Section-II: English Language and Comprehension (40) and General Awareness (20), 180 marks, 1 hour. Section-III: Computer Knowledge Test, 15 questions, 15 minutes, qualifying. 1 mark off per wrong answer.
  • Tier-II Session-II: Skill Test / Typing TestQualifying. Data Entry Operators take a 15-minute data-entry skill test (8,000 or 15,000 key depressions per hour depending on the post); LDC/JSA candidates take a 10-minute typing test at 35 w.p.m. (English) or 30 w.p.m. (Hindi). Every Tier-II section must be qualified.

SSC CHSL tips

  • Each Tier-I part has its own 15-minute timer, so time saved in one part cannot be carried over – pace each one separately.
  • With 2 marks per question and 0.50 off per wrong answer, guess only when you can rule out at least two options.
  • If you are aiming at LDC/JSA, practise typing early – the typing test is qualifying, so a high written score cannot make up for it.

Are these official SSC CHSL questions?

No. All 50 questions were written for this page to mirror the Tier-I parts. They are not taken from SSC papers, and the Commission has no connection with this site.

How many questions are in SSC CHSL Tier-I?

According to the official notice, 100 questions: 25 each in English Language, General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude and General Awareness, for 200 marks in 60 minutes.

Is there negative marking in SSC CHSL?

Yes. Tier-I deducts 0.50 marks per wrong answer. In Tier-II, Sections I, II and III deduct 1 mark per wrong answer.

What is the typing speed required for LDC/JSA?

The notice sets 35 words per minute for English medium and 30 words per minute for Hindi medium, judged on a 10-minute passage. The test is qualifying.

What can I do on the free plan?
