What personalization actually does

Most “personalized learning” claims in edtech marketing describe something much bigger than what actually ships — adaptive difficulty, tracked mastery, a generated curriculum. We want to describe ours accurately instead of overselling it. AI Personalization on SimpleQuizMaker is a specific, scoped feature: when you turn it on in Settings, three pieces of information about you get added to the prompt the AI uses to write your quiz. The quiz is still generated from real source material — a topic, your own notes, or a PDF you upload — and personalization changes how that material gets framed, not what it is.

It is opt-in and off by default for every account. Nothing about your quizzes changes until you explicitly turn it on. If you never touch the setting, generation works exactly as it always has.

The three signals, and only these three

This is the entire feature. There is no hidden fourth signal and nothing beyond what's listed here:

1. A short “about me” note you write yourself

In Settings, you can write a free-text note about yourself — your grade level, your interests, how you like things explained, whatever feels relevant. That note is used only to calibrate tone and framing. It never overrides the difficulty, question types, or factual accuracy of what you generate. A ninth-grader who mentions loving basketball might get an example phrased around a basketball stat instead of a generic one; the underlying question and correct answer stay identical to what a non-personalized quiz would test.

2. Topics you've previously struggled with

SimpleQuizMaker tracks which topics you've scored lower on across past quizzes. When personalization is on, the generator is told to favor reinforcing questions on those topics — but only when your current source material actually touches them. Generating a quiz on the French Revolution won't suddenly pull in a trigonometry question just because trigonometry is on your weak-topics list; the signal only applies where your real content overlaps with it.

3. Your recent quiz topics

A general signal of what domain you've been studying lately, used only to calibrate tone and vocabulary — for example, leaning slightly more technical if you've recently been generating quizzes in a specialized subject. It is explicitly not used to introduce content outside the source material you're quizzing on right now.

What this is not

We'd rather under-promise here than have you expect something the product doesn't do yet:

• Not automatic difficulty adaptation. Difficulty is still whatever you select when you generate — easy, medium, hard. Personalization never changes it behind the scenes.
• Not a full adaptive learning path or curriculum. There is no sequencing engine deciding what you should study next. You still choose every topic and every source yourself.
• Not mastery tracking beyond the weak-topics signal.We don't maintain a skill-level score per topic that updates in real time as you answer — the weak-topics input is a coarser, backward-looking signal drawn from past quiz performance, folded into the next generation, not a live tracking dashboard.
• Not the same thing as flashcard spaced repetition. The flashcard scheduler is a separate, SM-2-based system that spaces out review of individual cards based on how well you know them. That's a scheduling algorithm for flashcard review sessions — it has nothing to do with how a quiz gets generated, and quiz personalization doesn't use it.
• Not a way to generate off-topic content.Every signal above is explicitly constrained to stay within the source material you provide. Turning personalization on can't make the AI write about something you didn't ask it to.

This is deliberately described as Phase 1 of profile-based personalization internally — a foundation for tone and topic reinforcement within real generation, not a claim that a full adaptive system already exists.

How to turn it on

1. 1. Go to Settings.Find the “AI Personalization” section.
2. 2. Toggle personalization on.It's off by default — nothing changes until you flip this switch yourself.
3. 3. Write a short “about me” note (optional). A sentence or two is enough — grade level, interests, how you like things explained. This step is optional; the weak-topics and recent-topics signals still apply even if you leave the note blank, as long as you have quiz history for them to draw on.
4. 4. Generate a quiz as usual.Pick a topic, paste notes, or upload a PDF — the source-material step doesn't change. Personalization applies automatically to whatever you generate next.
5. 5. Turn it off any time. Flip the same toggle back off in Settings and the next quiz you generate reverts to the standard, non-personalized prompt.

How this fits into the rest of quiz generation

Personalization is an input to the same generation pipeline every SimpleQuizMaker quiz already goes through — it doesn't replace any step. You still choose a source (a topic name, pasted notes, or an uploaded PDF or image), a difficulty, a question count, and a mix of the four real question types (multiple choice, true/false, short answer, fill in the blank). Personalization signals get layered into the same prompt alongside those choices — they adjust tone and topic emphasis, not the mechanics of what gets generated. If you've used the AI quiz generator before, personalization is simply a Settings toggle that changes what happens inside a step you're already using — not a separate tool or a separate builder.

Getting the most out of it

Write a real “about me,” not a generic one

“I'm a student” gives the model almost nothing to work with. Something like “I'm a 10th grader who does better with concrete examples than abstract explanations” gives it an actual framing signal to use.

Let weak-topic reinforcement build up over time

The weak-topics signal is drawn from your own quiz history, so it has nothing to work with on your very first quiz. It gets more useful the more you use SimpleQuizMaker for a given subject — don't expect a dramatic effect from a single generation on day one.

Keep your source material specific

Personalization reinforces and reframes what's in your source material — it doesn't add scope. A vague topic name still produces a broad, generic quiz; pasting your actual notes still produces the sharpest, most exam-relevant result. Personalization is additive to good source material, not a substitute for it.

Turn it off if you want a neutral baseline

If you're sharing a quiz publicly or want every student in a class to see identically framed questions, turn personalization off before generating — it's a per-account toggle, so a teacher's own weak-topics history or “about me” note would otherwise be the one shaping the framing, not the class's.

Is personalization on by default?

No. It's opt-in and off by default for every account. You turn it on yourself from Settings under “AI Personalization.”

What exactly does personalization change?

Three inputs feed the generation prompt when it's on: an “about me” note you write, topics you've previously struggled with, and your recent quiz topics. Together they shape tone, framing, and which parts of your source material get reinforced — they don't change what the quiz is about, its difficulty, or its factual content.

Does personalization automatically adjust difficulty?

No. Difficulty is still whatever you pick at generation time. Personalization never overrides the difficulty, question types, or factual accuracy you requested.

Will the AI invent questions that aren't in my source material?

No. Every signal is explicitly scoped to your real source material — weak-topic reinforcement only applies where the source content already touches that topic, and recent-topic signals only calibrate tone and vocabulary, never subject matter.

Is this a full adaptive learning system?

No — and we want to be precise about that. This is Phase 1 of profile-based personalization: tone, framing, and topic reinforcement within a quiz generated from real material. It does not track mastery across topics, build a learning path, or adapt in real time as you answer.

How do I turn personalization on or off?

Settings → AI Personalization → toggle it on, and optionally write a short note about yourself. Flip it back off any time; your next generation reverts to the standard prompt immediately.
