How to Practise for the Cosmetology State Board Exam with Practice Quizzes

Share:XLinkedIn

Short answer. Most US states license cosmetologists with a written (theory) exam plus a practical exam. Many use the national exams developed by NIC, the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology, which are delivered through the state or its test vendor. The exact format, including question count, timing, fees and passing score, is in your state's Candidate Information Bulletin (CIB). Get that document first. Then quiz yourself on the theory content area by area, and rehearse the practical from the CIB checklist.

Checked against NIC on 24 September 2026. Details vary by state.

Cosmetology licensing exams at a glance

NIC offers three national exam types for cosmetology:

  • Theory: a written, multiple-choice knowledge exam.
  • Practical: you perform services under timed conditions and are scored against set criteria.
  • Written Practical: a written exam about practical procedures, used by some jurisdictions.
  • Who gives the exam: NIC develops the exams. States and authorised test administration companies deliver them as computer-based, practical or remote tests, with NIC's approval.

Where to find your format: state-specific CIBs are published by your state regulatory agency or its test vendor. NIC's site links to them through a state map. The CIB lists the content outline, sample questions, timing and rules.

Example from an NIC bulletin: the NIC Cosmetology Written Practical CIB describes 75 items, of which 65 are weighted (count toward the score), with 120 minutes allowed. Always use the current CIB from your own state, because versions and state rules change.

What the format means for how you practise

Theory is a broad knowledge test. Infection control and safety, hair and scalp science, chemical services, skin and nail care, and state laws and rules all appear. Your CIB's content outline is the checklist to work through.

Infection control is everywhere. Sanitation and disinfection come up on both the written and the practical exam. Know the steps and the reasons behind them.

The practical is a routine, not a quiz. You are scored on following set procedures in a set order within a time limit. Rehearse from the CIB's checklist until the routine is automatic.

Some states add a separate law exam. Check whether your state tests its own laws and rules separately.

Why content-area quizzes with spaced review work

Theory exams reward precise recall of procedures, safety rules and terminology, across many topics you studied months apart in school. Practice testing and distributed practice, the two most useful techniques in the review by Dunlosky et al. (2013), keep all of it available on exam day.

    A 6-week practice plan

Week 1: get your state's CIB. Download it from your state board or test vendor and list its content areas. Take the sample questions as a baseline.

Weeks 2–4: work through the theory content.

  • One content area every two days. Take a 10-question quiz the same day, re-quiz three days later, and again the next week.
  • Flashcards for chemical-service steps, pH and product terms, and disinfection procedures, on a spaced schedule.
  • Practical: rehearse one service from the CIB checklist twice a week, timed.
  • Week 5: mixed practice. Take a mixed theory quiz covering all content areas, and do a full timed practical run-through with your kit laid out as the CIB requires.

Week 6: taper. Short quizzes on your weakest content areas, a final practical run-through, and a kit check against the CIB's list.

  • Content-area quizzes. For example, "Cosmetology theory: disinfection versus sanitation, 10 questions with explanations." The free plan works from a topic or pasted text, with up to 10 questions per quiz and 5 generations a month.
  • Quizzes from your school notes or state laws. Paste your notes or your state's rules chapter so the questions follow your state's requirements.
  • Whole textbook chapters on Student. For $2.99 a month you can upload PDFs, Word files and images and generate up to 100 questions per quiz.
  • Flashcards for procedures, using the flashcard maker.
  • Science basics: the chemical reactions template helps with the chemistry behind colour and chemical services.
  • See the cosmetology exam page and the quiz maker for cosmetologists.

    Worked example: an infection-control quiz

Infection control runs through both the written and practical exams, so it is a good first topic.

  • Paste your school's infection-control notes, or the relevant section of your state's rules.
  • Generate 10 questions that cover the difference between cleaning, disinfecting and sterilising, how to handle multi-use and single-use items, and what to do after a blood exposure incident.
  • For every miss, write the correct procedure in order, step by step, on a flashcard.
  • Rehearse the same procedure physically during your next practical session, so that your written knowledge and practical routine match.
  • Common mistakes

  • Using another state's bulletin. The CIB for your state is the only reliable source for format and rules.
  • Studying theory only. The practical has its own scoring criteria, so rehearse it to time.
  • Forgetting kit requirements. Practical exams often list required supplies, so check the CIB's list well before test day.
  • Ignoring state laws and rules, which many states test.
  • Test-day checklist

  • Confirm your appointment, ID requirements and arrival time from the CIB or the vendor's confirmation.
  • For the practical, pack your kit from the CIB's list the night before, and label everything the CIB says must be labelled.
  • On the written exam, read each question for key words such as "first", "best" and "except", which change what is being asked.
  • After the exam, note any content areas that felt unfamiliar. If you need to retest, those are where to start.
  • Keep a one-page list of the disinfection steps and contact times your school taught, and read it aloud once a day in the final week so the order becomes automatic.
