Statistics Basics in 3 Minutes

Statistics is how you turn a pile of numbers into a story you can actually tell. Whether it's test scores, sports stats, or survey results, four ideas do most of the work: center, spread, data displays, and probability.

Start with the measures of center. The mean is the average: add everything up and divide by how many values you have. For the data set four, eight, six, ten, two, the sum is thirty and there are five values, so the mean is six. The median is the middle value once the data is sorted — for three, seven, nine, twelve, fifteen, the median is nine. The mode is simply the value that appears most often.

Next, spread. Two classes can both average seventy-five while one is tightly packed and the other is all over the place. The range — largest value minus smallest — gives a quick sense of spread. Standard deviation is the more careful measure: it tells you how far values typically sit from the mean. Here's the useful move: if the mean is twenty and the standard deviation is four, then a value of thirty sits two point five standard deviations above the mean — that's ten above, divided by four — which makes it unusually high. Values more than about two standard deviations from the mean are worth a second look.

Third, data displays. A box plot shows five numbers: the minimum, the first quartile, the median, the third quartile, and the maximum. The box itself stretches from the first to the third quartile, so its length is the interquartile range — the middle fifty percent of the data. A histogram groups data into bins and shows how many values fall in each, revealing the shape of the distribution. And watch out for outliers: one extreme value can drag the mean dramatically while barely touching the median, which is why the median is the better center for skewed data like home prices.

Finally, basic probability. The probability of an event is the number of favorable outcomes divided by the total number of outcomes. A bag holding four red marbles and six blue ones has ten marbles total, so the probability of drawing red is four out of ten, which simplifies to two-fifths, or zero point four.

The common mistake: forgetting to sort before finding the median. The median is the middle of the ordered list, not the middle of the list as written.
