AI PDF Summarizer

Upload a PDF, Word document or text file and get the main points back in under a minute: a short TL;DR, the key ideas as full sentences, the terms you need to know and a short "what to remember" list. Pick your education level and the summary is written for that reader.

Free account, no credit card. Running AI tools is included in every paid plan (from $1.99/mo).

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload your file

PDF, DOCX, DOC or TXT up to 10 MB — or paste the text instead.

  2. 2

    Pick your level

Elementary to university or professional. The wording and depth follow it.

  3. 3

    Read, copy or quiz yourself

Copy the summary, or send it to the quiz maker to test what you just read.

What you get

  • Structured, not a wall of text

Every summary has the same four parts — TL;DR, main points, key terms, what to remember — so you know where to look.

  • Written for your level

The same chapter reads differently for a middle-school student and a university student. Choose one and the summary adapts.

  • Sticks to your document

The summary is built from the file you upload; it is told not to add facts that are not in it.

  • Any language in, same language out

Summaries come back in the language of your document.

  • One click to a quiz

Turn the summary into a practice quiz in the quiz maker without copying anything by hand.

What the PDF summarizer does

It reads the text of your document — the first 12,000 characters, roughly 6–8 pages of a typical textbook — and condenses it into the parts a student actually reviews from: the gist, the main claims, the vocabulary and the few points worth memorising.

Scanned PDFs that are only images have no text layer to read. If the summary comes back empty, run the pages through a phone scanner app with text recognition first, or paste the text in.

Who it is for

Students catching up on assigned reading, teachers previewing an article before class, and anyone who needs the shape of a long document before reading it properly.

  • Textbook chapters and lecture handouts
  • Research papers and reports
  • Policy documents, manuals and study guides

Tips for better summaries

A summary is only as good as the text it reads, so a few minutes of preparation pays off. Because the tool reads the first 12,000 characters, upload the chapter or section you actually need rather than a whole book: a 200-page PDF will be summarized from its opening pages, which are often a title page, a table of contents and a preface.

If your file starts with a lot of front matter, paste the relevant pages as text instead. The text tab has the same 12,000-character limit, and pasting lets you choose exactly where the summary begins.

  • Split long books into chapters and summarize each one
  • Pick the level you are studying at, not the level the document was written for
  • Read the main points first, then skim the original for the parts they point to
  • Keep the key terms list as a starting vocabulary sheet

Example: what you get back

Upload a ten-page chapter on the water cycle at middle-school level and the result has four parts. The TL;DR states in two or three sentences how water moves between oceans, air and land. The main points list five to eight full sentences — evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection and the role of the sun. The key terms give one-line meanings for words like transpiration and runoff, and "what to remember" closes with three points worth knowing for a test.

Choose university level for the same chapter and the wording becomes denser and more technical, while the four-part structure stays the same.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PDF summarizer free?

Creating an account is free. Running the AI tools — including this summarizer — is part of every paid plan, along with file uploads for the quiz maker. You can open the tool and look around on a free account.

How long a document can I summarize?

Files up to 10 MB. The summary is built from the first 12,000 characters of text, about 6–8 textbook pages; for a longer book, summarize it chapter by chapter.

Will it make things up?

The summarizer is instructed to use only what is in your document, which keeps it grounded, but AI can still misread a passage. Treat the summary as a study aid and check anything you will be graded on against the source.

Can I turn the summary into a quiz?

Yes. Click “Make a quiz from this” and the summary opens in the quiz maker ready to generate questions.

Can it summarize a scanned PDF?

Only if the file has a text layer. A scan that is just page images has no text to read; run it through a scanner app with text recognition first, or paste the text in.

Which school level should I pick?

Pick the level you are studying at. The same document is summarized in simpler words with more explanation at elementary or middle-school level, and in denser, more technical language at university or professional level. The four-part structure stays the same, so you can rerun it at another level to compare.
