Vocabulary Flashcards That Actually Stick: A Practical Guide
TL;DR. Vocabulary flashcards work when each card tests one word in one direction with a real example sentence, and when you review them on a spaced schedule. Add 10 to 20 new words a day, review every day, and make separate cards for recognition (word to meaning) and production (meaning to word). You can build a first deck in minutes with the AI flashcard maker by typing a topic like "Spanish kitchen vocabulary" or pasting your word list, then edit the cards into the format below.
Why most vocabulary decks fail
Three common problems:
Fix those three and vocabulary flashcards become one of the most efficient study methods there is. Our broader vocabulary quiz strategies post covers testing; this one is about the cards.
Four card templates that work
1. Recognition card (word to meaning)
Use this for every new word. It is the easiest direction.
2. Production card (meaning to word)
This is harder and more useful for speaking and writing. Add it once the recognition card is stable, usually after a week.
3. Cloze sentence card
Great for grammar-sensitive words such as prepositions, verb forms and phrasal verbs.
4. Definition card for exam vocabulary (SAT, GRE, subject jargon)
For subject vocabulary in biology, law or economics, the same format works: term on the front, a one-line definition plus a use-in-context on the back.

How many new words a day?
Spaced repetition means each new word creates future reviews. A rough rule for SM-2-style schedulers: daily reviews settle at about 5 to 10 times your daily new cards after a few weeks.
| New words per day | Approx. daily reviews after a month | Daily time (about 8 sec/card) |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 25-50 | 5-8 min |
| 10 | 50-100 | 8-15 min |
| 20 | 100-200 | 15-30 min |
| 40 | 200-400 | 30-55 min |
For most learners, 10 to 20 new words a day is sustainable. See how many flashcards per day for the math.

Building the deck with AI (and fixing it)
Typing 350 cards by hand is the part most people quit. With SimpleQuizMaker you can:

Tips that make words stick
For teachers
If you teach a language, a shared vocabulary deck per unit saves students hours. Generate the deck from your unit list, check it, and publish it to the Public Decks library or share it with your class. More ideas in flashcards for teachers and on our teacher page.
Bottom line
Good vocabulary flashcards are small, directional and in context, and they are reviewed on a schedule. Pick 10 to 20 words a day, write recognition cards first and production cards second, and do not skip a day of reviews. To get your first deck done tonight, generate vocabulary flashcards from your word list and spend the saved time reviewing.
