The ground under your feet feels permanent, but it's actually moving, melting, and recycling itself all the time. Earth science is the story of that restless planet — let's cover the big chapters.
Chapter one: Earth's layers. From the outside in, there are four — the crust, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core. The crust is the thin rocky shell we live on. Below it, the mantle is hot rock that slowly flows over millions of years. The outer core is liquid metal — and its churning is what generates Earth's magnetic field — while the inner core, despite being the hottest layer, is solid, squeezed solid by the crushing pressure above it.
Chapter two: plate tectonics. The crust is cracked into huge slabs called plates that ride on the slowly flowing mantle, moving a few centimeters per year — about as fast as your fingernails grow. Where plates grind past each other, stress builds and releases as earthquakes. Where they collide or pull apart, we get volcanoes and mountain ranges. This is the modern version of continental drift, the older observation that continents like South America and Africa fit together like puzzle pieces.
Chapter three: the rock cycle. Every rock belongs to one of three families, defined by how it formed. Igneous rock forms when melted rock cools and hardens — granite and basalt. Sedimentary rock forms when layers of sand, mud, and shell fragments get compacted and cemented over time — sandstone and limestone, and it's the family where you find fossils. Metamorphic rock forms when existing rock is transformed by heat and pressure without fully melting — limestone becomes marble. And it's a true cycle: any rock type can eventually become any other.
Chapter four: weather versus climate. Weather is what the atmosphere is doing right now — today's rain, this week's heat wave. Climate is the average pattern of weather over a long stretch, typically thirty years or more. One snowy day is weather; the fact that your city gets snowy winters is climate.
The misconception to correct: lava does not come from Earth's core. Magma forms in the crust and upper mantle, relatively near the surface — the core is thousands of kilometers deeper.
