A Simpler Nearpod Alternative for Quiz-First Teachers

Nearpod and SimpleQuizMaker solve different problems, and the honest answer depends on which problem you have. Nearpod is a lesson-delivery platform. You build or pick a lesson, then run it live with the class following your pace, let students move through it on their own, or project it at the front of the room. Along the way you get polls, open-ended prompts, matching and other activities, plus a library of more than 22,000 standards-aligned lessons, videos and activities. At school and district level it adds LTI 1.3 for Canvas, Schoology and Blackboard, Clever and ClassLink rostering, SSO, student accounts and admin reporting. If your school has bought it and you teach whole lessons through it, SimpleQuizMaker does not replace that. SimpleQuizMaker is narrower. Upload the file on the Student plan, choose 5 to 100 questions, share a link, and students take the quiz with no account. Submissions are unlimited, so the 40-join cap on Nearpod's free plan does not apply. Paid users can print it with an answer key or export it to Word or Google Forms. Price is also different. Nearpod's individual plans are yearly: $159 for Gold, $397 for Platinum, and AI question generation starts at Gold. SimpleQuizMaker is $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year, and the free plan already includes five AI generations a month. A simple rule: if you need live, paced lesson delivery, interactive slides or district rostering, choose Nearpod. If you mostly need assessment quizzes, homework checks or revision material generated from content you already have, and you want to pay monthly or nothing, choose SimpleQuizMaker. Many teachers can reasonably use both: Nearpod for the lesson, SimpleQuizMaker for the follow-up quiz.

Illustrative scenario: a secondary science teacher uses the free Nearpod Silver plan. Lessons go well, but she has two combined sections for review week and the free plan allows 40 student joins per lesson. She also wants quizzes built from the chapter PDFs she already hands out, and AI question generation on Nearpod would mean moving to Gold at $159 a year.
