The Praxis Tests: What Teachers Need to Know

Becoming a licensed teacher requires passing standardized tests — and in most states, those tests are from the Praxis series published by ETS. The tests you need depend on your state and the grade level/subject you want to teach.

Main Praxis tests:

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators

Required in most states as an admission-to-teacher-education or certification requirement. Three tests:

  • Core Reading (5713): 85 minutes, 56 questions
  • Core Writing (5723): 100 minutes, 40 selected response + 2 essays
  • Core Mathematics (5733): 85 minutes, 56 questions
  • Praxis Subject Assessments

Content-specific tests for the subject you want to teach: Elementary Education, Middle School, High School (Biology, History, Math, English, etc.).

Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT)

Tests pedagogical knowledge for grade-band certification (early childhood, K–6, 5–9, 7–12).

    Praxis Core: Strategies by Section

    Core Reading

Core Reading tests key ideas and details, craft and structure, and integration of knowledge and ideas across literary and informational texts.

    Question types:

  • Main idea and supporting detail
  • Vocabulary in context
  • Author's purpose and tone
  • Inference and implication
  • Logical argument evaluation
  • Quiz strategy: Generate reading comprehension quizzes from educational articles, academic essays, and literary passages. Practice identifying what the author's primary purpose is, what can be inferred vs. what is explicitly stated, and which answer choice is most supported by the passage.

Time management: 85 minutes / 56 questions = ~1.5 minutes per question. Eliminate obvious wrong answers quickly and move on.

    Core Writing

Core Writing tests usage, sentence correction, revision, and essay writing.

Selected response (multiple choice): Grammar, punctuation, and usage questions — similar to ACT English or SAT Writing sections.

    Essays:

  • Argumentative essay (30 minutes): Take a position on an issue and support it with reasons and examples
  • Informative/explanatory essay (30 minutes): Explain the relationship between two concepts
  • Quiz strategy:

  • Generate grammar correction quizzes targeting comma rules, subject-verb agreement, apostrophes, and parallel structure
  • Practice timed essay writing: use 5 minutes for planning, 20 minutes for drafting, 5 minutes for revision
  • Generate argument prompt practice: state a clear thesis, develop 2–3 supporting points with specific examples
  • Core Mathematics

Core Math covers Number and Quantity (36%), Algebra and Functions (30%), Geometry (20%), and Statistics and Probability (14%).

    Quiz strategy:

  • Generate word problems for each content area — Praxis Math tests real-world application
  • Practice fractions, percentages, and ratio problems (high frequency)
  • Generate linear equation and inequality problems
  • Practice data interpretation questions from graphs and tables
  • Calculator: On-screen calculator is provided for most questions. Know when to use it efficiently.

Praxis Subject Assessments: Content + Pedagogy

Subject assessment quizzes should cover two areas:

Content knowledge: The specific subject matter you'll teach. For Elementary Education, this spans reading, writing, math, science, and social studies at an integrated level. For secondary subjects, it goes deeper into the discipline.

Pedagogical knowledge: How to teach the subject. Questions ask which instructional strategy is appropriate for a given learning objective, how to assess a specific skill, or what accommodation would support a particular learner.

    Quiz strategy:

  • Use your subject's official ETS Study Companion (free download from ets.org/praxis) — it lists all content categories and sample questions
  • Generate content quizzes from each content category
  • Generate pedagogical application questions: "A teacher wants to assess whether students can apply the distributive property. Which of the following assessment methods is most appropriate?"
  • Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT)

    The PLT tests four categories:

  • Students as Learners (22%)
  • Instructional Process (23%)
  • Assessment (22%)
  • Professional Development, Leadership, and Community (13%)
  • Analysis of Instructional Scenarios (case study questions — 20%)
  • Quiz strategy:

  • Study foundational learning theories (Piaget, Vygotsky, Bloom's Taxonomy, Maslow) — these appear constantly
  • Generate scenario-based questions: "A teacher notices that several students are struggling with a concept after direct instruction. Which of the following would be the most appropriate next step?"
  • Practice case study analysis: read a teaching scenario, then answer questions about what the teacher should do and why
  • Bloom's Taxonomy: Essential for PLT

Understanding Bloom's Taxonomy is essential for PLT and appears in almost every teacher certification exam:

  • Remember: Recall facts (define, list, identify)
  • Understand: Interpret meaning (explain, summarize, classify)
  • Apply: Use in new situations (solve, demonstrate, use)
  • Analyze: Break into parts (differentiate, compare, examine)
  • Evaluate: Make judgments (assess, argue, defend)
  • Create: Produce new work (design, construct, develop)
  • Generate quiz questions asking which level of Bloom's is targeted by various learning objectives and assessment tasks.

    Praxis Score Requirements by State

Passing scores vary by state. Most states require:

  • Core Reading: 156
  • Core Writing: 162
  • Core Mathematics: 150
  • Check your state education agency website for your specific requirements. Some states accept alternatives to Praxis Core (GRE, SAT/ACT scores above thresholds).
